Chapter Ten

The nerves intensify as we approach the back entrance of the Black Fan. I know what's going to happen once we're inside, and I'm not sure that I'm ready for it, even if it is deserved. I should have told Catherine about who I am the moment she asked me to work for her, but for some reason, I was a fool who thought I could keep it completely secret.

Bindi and Elijah are laughing and joking as they make their way inside, but Catherine is silent and thoughtful. No doubt she's as aware as I am about the conversation that's coming and isn't looking forward to it either. Whether or not she's angry at me, I have to believe that she doesn't hate me. And that makes everything that bit more complicated.

"Leave us," Catherine commands the others in a tone I've never heard from her before.

Bindi and Elijah exchange a quick glance, but do as she asks, disappearing into the other room.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Catherine asks me, steel in her voice.

I stand as straight as I can. The woman in front of me may be formidable, but she's not someone I should be scared of. Even if she's angry and hurt, I don't think she'll be throwing me out onto the street at the end of the conversation, especially if I can convince her that I'm not spying for my sister. Which is something I wouldn't dream of doing at the best of times.

"I didn't tell anyone. Even my family don't know I'm still here." Though they've probably figured it out by now. Especially when I didn't return home straight away.

"Why did you come to the city?"

I start to pace, even though it's maybe not the best idea to reveal how on edge this entire situation puts me.

"To stop Reese. My family thought it would be possible to talk sense into her."

Catherine snorts. "I could have told you that wasn't going to work without you needing to come here."

"I knew it wouldn't," I admit. "She's always been stubborn."

"Then why did you come?"

"I had to. No one was going to let it go. It was either come, or listen to them complain about what Reese is doing for the next thirty years. And on the off chance she would listen to me, I thought it was better to try. She offered to let me leave the city after she told me no."

"But you decided to stay?"

"I'd only been here for a couple of days, but it was long enough for me to know that the walls have to fall. People can't live like this, and even if it takes me years, perhaps I'll be able to do something. I don't know. Sometimes it feels like nothing more than an unattainable dream."

I can't believe she's listening to me so patiently and without threatening to throw me out of the brothel right before dawn.

Except that as soon as I think it through, I realise that's not the kind of thing Catherine would do to anyone.
